137 years since the Unification of Bulgaria

September 6, 2022, marks the 137th anniversary of the unification of the principality of Bulgaria with the autonomous region of Eastern Rumelia. This is an important step towards the achievement of national unification of the Bulgarian people and in historical terms is a natural continuation of the revolutionary action of April 1876 and the Renaissance ideas for National Liberation.

The official proclamations of the Unification took place on September 6, 1885, in Plovdiv, where a Provisional Government was formed with Dr. Geogri Stransky as President. on 8 September Prince Alexander Battenberg issued a proclamation declaring himself “Prince of Northern and Southern Bulgaria”, and the next day he and Prime Minister Petko Karavelov were already in Plovdiv.
