Exhibition: “Orders, Medals, Awards, and Distinctions from the Fund of the Regional History Museum – Pazardzhik”

Starting October 15, 2024, the exhibition titled “Orders, Medals, Awards, and Distinctions from the Fund of the Regional History Museum – Pazardzhik” will be displayed in the “New History” exhibition hall of the Regional History Museum in Pazardzhik. This exhibition features significant state awards bestowed upon citizens of Pazardzhik and the surrounding region from the Liberation of Bulgaria in 1878 to the end of the 20th century.

The collection showcases orders and commemorative medals that celebrate various historical events, including the anniversaries of the April Uprising of 1876, participation in the War of Liberation (1877–1878), medals commemorating the Unification of Bulgaria, and the Serbo-Bulgarian War (1885–1886). It also includes commemorative medals celebrating Bulgaria’s Independence in 1908.

The national unification wars from 1912 to 1918 demanded significant effort and sacrifice from the Bulgarian people, marking important chapters in the history of the Bulgarian army, despite the fact that the national ideals were not fully realized. This period saw the issuance of orders and medals for bravery and military merit, such as the Order of Bravery of the Regiment, which will be featured in the exhibition. Notable exhibits include the Soldier’s Cross for Bravery awarded to Lieutenant Ivan Batakliev—who later became a distinguished scientist and professor at Sofia University—as well as other foreign awards given to Bulgarian soldiers, like the German Iron Cross and the Ottoman Order of the Star of Gallipoli. The exhibition will also display awards given to soldiers from the Entente who fell into Bulgarian captivity.

In addition to military honors, the years of peaceful labor and achievement also had their own heroes deserving of recognition. The exhibition includes the Orders of Civil Merit (III degree) and St. Alexander (IV degree), awarded to Professor Batakliev by Tsar Boris III, alongside the Orders of the People’s Republic of Bulgaria (I degree) and Cyril and Methodius (I degree), the latter awarded to the National Guard “Videlina” in Pazardzhik. Visitors will also see medals awarded to the folk singer Nadka Karadjova, including the Order of Stara Planina, as well as other recent awards preserved in the collection of the Regional History Museum – Pazardzhik.

The exhibition will be open for visitors until November 22, 2024. Opening hours are as follows: on weekdays from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, and on Saturdays and Sundays from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM.
